Stellenbosch MTB Tours
The densest trail network in the Western Cape, forty minutes from Cape Town.
Stellenbosch is where Western Cape mountain biking is densest. Within fifteen minutes of the town centre you have a nature reserve with world-class natural singletrack, a mountain of flowing built trail, and a ring of wine estates with purpose-built networks across their vineyards.
That density is why most multi-day trips base here, and why we recommend it to first-time visitors. You can ride a different network every day without a long transfer, the guesthouses and restaurants are the best in the region, and Cape Town International Airport is forty-five minutes away.
Cape Line Co. doesn't run tours in Stellenbosch. We plan the trip and book it with a local partner operator β guides who ride these trails every week, with the permits, bikes, shuttles and lodges to deliver a proper multi-day trip.
The networks
Where you'll ride.
A mountain valley above town with long climbs on forestry track and a set of natural singletrack descents that are the benchmark for Western Cape riding. Exposed, rocky in places, and worth the effort. Day permits apply and are arranged by your operator.
The trails directly above the university, across the mountain's lower slopes. Flowing machine-built descents, pine-forest sections and a traverse that links to the Jonkershoek side. The classic big day on the Winelands Multi-Day trip.
Rolling vineyard hills to the north-west of town with purpose-built trail across several wine farms. Less exposed, less climbing per kilometre, and ideal for a warm-up day or a mixed-ability group.
The valley between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, with conservancy trails on private farmland. Quieter than Jonkershoek and a natural link to the Franschhoek side of the Winelands Multi-Day trip.
Estate trails on the slopes of the Simonsberg. Shorter loops that combine well with a lunch stop, and a sensible choice for a rest-day spin.
Practical
What to know.
Most Stellenbosch networks sit on nature reserve or private farmland and require a day permit. Partner operators hold the commercial guiding permits and arrange rider permits as part of the trip. You don't need to organise any of it.
October to April is dry and reliable, with January and February hot. Operators start early and finish by early afternoon on the hottest days. Winter riding is possible but wet and better suited to locals.
A 120β150 mm trail bike is the right tool here. Partner operators arrange quality hire bikes if you'd rather not fly with your own; we confirm the option and price in your proposal.
Stellenbosch has the best lodge and guesthouse choice in the Winelands, and most multi-day trips base here for at least two nights. Your operator's lodge selection is listed in your proposal.
